QNAP TS-879U-RP - a totally new breed 8-bay rack mount NAS server that is built around the Intel i3-2120 processor platform. It’s Fast and Furious, packed with Features that will warm the cockles of any CTO’s heart. The TS-879U-RP has been touted as a replacement for the TS-809U-RP, that being true the TS-879U-RP swipes the floor with its older sibling and is a credible successor. It’s a welcome for disenchanted storage buyers to see systems in this class being designed on the Intel platform as it provides a certain level of stability that would have otherwise not been previously present when the market was first introduced to SMB NAS back in 2004.

QNAP has launched the X79 range of which the TS-879PRO is an 8-bay tower system that is designed on the Intel i3-2120 platform. QNAP was kind enough to provide us with a review unit at very short notice and was delivered promptly as specified. The convergence of server and storage platform is now more so than it ever was. QNAP has clearly adopted this, and produced a range of NAS servers that will be around for a few years to come. QNAP has also announced the 10-bay TS-1079 PRO and 12-Bay TS-1279U-RP, however, these have not found their way into the mainstream as of yet, but as we write, we are sure it’s only a matter of days and not weeks. We have been informed that the TS-1279U-RP, although announced at Computex this year, does not have a release date as yet.
